VoyceTails: Growing Up (Joel and Laila)

Joel’s exposure to agility training came shortly after his adoption. Just a few days after bringing Joel home, Laila found herself working the Voyce booth at Super Pet Expo, one of the largest gatherings of pet lovers in the country, in Chantilly, VA. Since it is a very “dog-friendly” event, Laila thought it would be better if Joel joined her rather than spending those first days home alone.

A co-worker had told Laila to check out The Animal House, a training and agility center located in the Northern Viriginia area. They had a full training space set up at Super Pet and Laila and Joel stopped by to have a look. He seemed interested and she thought it might just be the perfect activity for her and Miss A to do with Joel as a family.

They began classes that summer and Joel took to it like a duck to water. He is a smart pup who had been looking for more “jobs” to do and the mental aspects of agility appealed to him. The group was full of beginners with a positive and laid-back vibe and Laila and her daughter had fun as they watched Joel catch on more and more quickly.

A proud pup, Joel poses after one of his sessions.

He often came home from his classes exhausted and in need of a nice long nap.

Joel’s favorite activity at agility school was without a doubt the tunnel, so much so that Laila decided to get one for her backyard.

Here they are unpacking it in the house, as you can see, it’s a huge hit with Joel!

Joel enjoyed just about every aspect of agility training except the weave. He just could not understand why anyone would bob back and forth when the option of a straight line was available. Jumps, A frames and the teeter were eventual successes and the tunnel remains his first love.

The family has completed several training course cycles and though they have chosen not to compete, they do enjoy setting up a practice course with household materials like brooms and buckets and a plank or two in the backyard.

Join us again next week to hear about more about Joel and Laila and his escapades around the office.

#VoyceTails is a weekly peek into the lives of members of the Voyce team, a group of dedicated professionals who work to improve healthcare and wellbeing for dogs through use of the Voyce health monitor and services we have created. A team member and their dog will be profiled each month, sharing their stories, pictures and insight. Because who doesn't love to chase a good dog tail? #voycetails
