Managing TJ's Obesity Through Remote Monitoring
Over half of all dogs in North America are overweight or obese. That is a large number of dogs that are at risk for developing health conditions due to or developing alongside obesity. However, obesity is a condition that can be overcome and managed, through consulting with veterinary professionals and using a proven method for managing canine obesity.
TJ is a 5 year old Dalmatian whose owner, Paris, became concerned about his weight gain after he injured his leg jumping. He weighed 91 lbs. and was visibly overweight. Paris approached her veterinary team with her concerns, who referred her to Dr. Goulard at Paws on the Go, where TJ began receiving treatment for weight management and arthritis. Dr. Goulard recommended Voyce Pro™ as part of TJ’s treatment plan, to enable objective monitoring of TJ’s progress. TJ began wearing the Voyce Health Monitor™ on July 13th, 2015.
Dr. Goulard and Paris decided on a target weight of 77 lbs., using a treatment plan that would take approximately 6 months. The Voyce Health Monitor was incorporated into this treatment plan to help monitor activity and calories burned, to set weight loss and activity goals, and to track TJ’s progress toward them.
Dr. Goulard and Paris developed a treatment plan to fit TJ’s weight loss needs, which included clear dietary instructions and exercise requirements. By creating a plan that incorporated diet and exercise, Dr. Goulard was able to monitor the proper ratio of calories consumed to calories burned, using Voyce, to ensure a successful weight loss outcome.
Setting Goals with Voyce
Starting on July 14th 2015, Paris and Dr. Goulard created an activity goal of 1 hour and 13 minutes per day for TJ. From July 14th 2015 to February 11th 2016, TJ’s activity goal was met 179 days, and missed 35 days. Monitoring took place over 214 days, with an 83.6% success rate.

What they had to say about remote monitoring
Dr. Goulard reports, “TJ was referred to us for arthritis and weight management, and at that time, TJ’s BCS was estimated at 8/9. His treatment plan involved diet, pain management, exercise and biweekly weigh-ins. We estimated his weight loss plan would take a minimum of 6 months. The Voyce Health Monitor was an integral part of his plan. Voyce not only kept track of his activity at home, but also kept his owner engaged… I find that Voyce helps the veterinary team stay in contact with the owner so they feel this continuing cheerleading effect, which in turns into more success stories. We are thankful to have had Voyce as a critical tool in TJ’s weight loss treatment.” – Caroline Goulard, DVM CVA CVPP
Paris reports that Voyce “has been a major tool to keep me informed of TJ’s calorie burn. With it, I have been able to monitor not only his daily calories burned, but his daily activity levels which are extremely important in his journey towards better health. We have been using Voyce since July 2015 and at that point, TJ weighed almost 95 lbs. With Dr. Goulard and her very caring technician Alba, and with Voyce, TJ has gotten down to 80 lbs.! Voyce has been an integral part of helping TJ accomplish his weight loss goal.”
How remote monitoring can help your dog achieve their health goals
As we can see in TJ’s story, remote monitoring played a fundamental role in his weight loss management. It provided previously unavailable objective data to both the veterinarian and the pet owner, showing them the progress TJ was making, and ultimately helping him to reach his weight loss goals. This kept pet parents engaged in the process and motivated to continue with the program. It allowed the veterinarian to track their patient’s vitals from home, keeping the veterinarian informed of their progress, and able to make adjustments to treatment programs quicker than ever before.
Remote monitoring using the Voyce Health Monitor and Wellness Management System collects objective data on key wellness indicators, such as resting heart rate, resting respiratory rate, activity and intensity level tracking, quality of rest and calories burned, which can give you and your veterinarian a clearer picture of your dog’s overall wellbeing. This Wellness Management System is for every stage of your dog’s life, and can be useful in early diagnosis of issues, as well as managing ongoing conditions beyond weight loss, such as heart disease, osteoarthritis, and more.
