Seven Reasons to Adopt a Senior Dog

If you’ve been thinking of adopting a dog, but aren’t sure you have the time and energy for a puppy, why not consider adopting a senior? The ASPCA has named November Adopt a Senior Pet Month, and now is a great time to consider giving an older dog a second chance.

Here are some reasons that senior dogs are a great pick!

1. No surprises

With a puppy, you can guess, but you don’t know how big he’ll get. You also don’t know how much energy he will have. But with a senior dog, what you see is what you get.

2. They’re often calmer

Puppies are cute, but they have a lot of energy to burn. Older dogs have usually finished their craziest phases, and with their more relax demeanor and well-developed personalities, you will know whether or not they’ll be a fit for your family.

3. They come with some training

Most older dogs are already housetrained, and some even come with additional knowledge like “sit,” “stay,” and “come.”

4. You can teach an old dog new tricks!

Having said that, you can still train older dogs to do the cool things you can train a younger dog to do! Not only are they smart, they also tend to have longer attention-spans and it takes more to distract them.

5. Retirement is laid back

Older dogs still need exercise, but they don’t need as much as high-energy, younger dogs! They will enjoy walks with you, but they’ll also love to hang out around the house. Not only that, but they don’t require constant monitoring like puppies do, so you have more freedom with an older pooch.

6. They’re not damaged goods

There are a lot of reasons that people surrender their dogs – just because they’re older doesn’t mean they have behavior or health problems. A senior dog may be exactly the best friend you’ve been looking for.

7. Adopt a senior, save a life

The sad reality is that older dogs are often overlooked in shelters and end up being towards the front of the line for euthanasia. If you adopt a senior dog, there is a good chance that you are literally saving his life. And the love and joy you will receive in return will make you wonder why people aren’t lining up to do the same.
