Tips: What to do if You Find a Stray Dog
If you find a potentially abandoned dog, there are many ways you can help without taking on the new stress and responsibility of having a pup.
The Humane Society of the United States suggests following a few guidelines when providing safe and effective help for the furry friend in need.
- Drive safely: If you are driving and you have stumbled upon a stray pup, be cautious. Avoid causing a traffic incident while retrieving the dog.
- Approach him cautiously: Be aware that the furry friend may be scared of you at first glance. If you have decided to approach him, take caution.
- Call your local animal shelter: If you have decided to find the owner on your own, make sure you contact the animal shelter and animal control office to make them aware of the retrieval.
- Go to the animal hospital: Make sure to take the pup to an animal hospital so they can check him for an embedded microchip to retrieve his owners information.
